The pen is mightier than the…pencil?

Apr 21, 2011 by

I love eyeliner, as far as my make-up looks go, eyeliner is a must in every look. Using a pencil can be nice, and its easier to correct any mistakes, however it doesn’t always deliver. A pen style eye liner makes it easy for you to channel your inner make-up artist and line those peepers like a pro. When using a pen eye liner  you are able to apply a quick drying line that isn’t going to smear, smudge, or feather. A pen marker makes it easy to go from a thin line to a dramatic look. Even those of us with shaky hands can use this particular style due to the control that these offer.

- Thin: use the point of the tip for a slender, exact line

- Medium: hold pen at a slight angle to create a bold, thicker line

- Heavy: hold the pen horizontally and color over the eyelid area for an eyeshadow like coverage

The Grade Sheet

CoverGirl Line Exact Liquid Liner Pen ($7)  C-

It’s called a pen style liner, and essentially it is, but how many pens do you use that are  two inches long? The short length of the pen aside, it does have a decent felt tip. However, this runny liner does not live up to my expectations, it smears, smudges, and fades.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner ($18)  B

I love the small felt tip that this has, its pointy enough to get the perfect thin line. If you want more drama this is great for building up the intensity of the line. Each of the four shades are extremely pigmented and can be worn over eyeshadow or alone. Another perk? This manages to last throughout the whole day without giving me racoon eyes!

Tokidoki Perfetto Eyeliner ($16)  B

The packaging of these eyeliners is definitely my favorite feature, its perfect for anyone who wants to bring something fun into their make-up routine. There are eight to die for colors, each richly pigmented. The one thing that I was not ecstatic about is the stiff tip, it makes this liner more accident prone.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner ($20)  A

One of the hardest parts about lining my eyes is keeping them shut long enough for it to dry. I always end up opening them giving me a weird double liner look, this particular one makes that impossible. The fast drying formula is a life saver. It comes in three colors (black, brown, and blue) that are very pigmented and last ALL day, and if necessary into the next morning. ;)

Revlon Color Stay Liquid Eye Pen ($7)  D

I had high expectations for this one due to the size and shape of the tip, however I was disappointed from the beginning. As soon as I managed to get the packaging to work and applied it the line became smeared. The name of this liner is highly misleading, “color stay” insinuates that it’s going to last through the day, this didn’t manage to last through lunch. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone. Ever.

E.L.F. Waterproof Eyeliner Pen ($1) A

Can you say Ah-mazing?  As soon as I used this I went back out and bought each color, seven in total. I love that this has a moderately stiff applicator that offers the perfect line. The no budge formula is great, and the color lasts for hours. As far as the waterproof part goes, its more like water resistant (for a very short period), so don’t cry.

LORAC Front of the Line Pro ($23) A

The packaging for this liner looks like most of the similar styles, however the delivery is slightly different. To disperse more liner from this you”click” it, this way the felt tip can never dry up, and you waste less product. There are only two color choices black and brown, however they are both beautiful on, and work well over eyeshadow. I love the look these provide and the versatility.

Smashbox Limitless Liquid Liner Pen ($22) B

The best part of this liner is the felt tip, its small enough that it can make fine lines but its also perfect for making thicker lines. It comes in black and dark brown, both of which last all day and are waterproof! This is the liner that I most often use on brides, it offers a very natural look.
